The creditor has started the foreclosure process on the property but I really don’t know for how long we can stay in the house. Is there any time frame till when people are allowed to stay during foreclosure?

You can stay till the foreclosure proceeding is complete. But once your house has been foreclosed, then you will have to leave it within a certain time period or till you have been evicted from the place.

You can stay in the house until the foreclosed process is final and the property is sold in the public auction at the courthouse. The foreclosure process is long as the lender has to get a default judgment, summary judgment and then a sale date. However, it may not be possible to predict how long the process can take. The process can be completed within 90 days or it can almost take a year.

Have you tried to get a loan modification from the lender? If that is not an option what about a short sale?. Contact a Realtor who will contact the mortgage company. They may agree to sell the house for less than you owe. It will not go on your credit as a foreclosure. I was able to do it several years ago. I think it is more common today
