Are collectors making calls to your home allowed to leave a message with the amount you owe on a debt on your telephone answering service, particularly if the answering service is a device heard by anyone in the room?

I would venture to say yes if that is your home address they have on file.

how often - legally - can a debt collector call you in a 24 hour period? are there any legal way to stop them or to limit the calls?

Have you previously spoken to them? If not, answer the phone at least once, verify you are indeed the person they are looking for and your address and tell them you expect their written follow up communication w/in 5 days. If you have spoken to them already and they have not sent you written communication and are still calling repeatedly, then they are in violation of the fdcpa. Start a log of all the calls, any previous communication you've had (written or verbal). You can file complaints with the FTC and AG's of yours and their states and even the FCC. Without more info on this, SOL or DOFD, you might want to hold off on the C&D.

debt collectors are only permitted to leave their name and phone number....nothing else. Disclosing a debt on an answering machine is no no.

How many times can they call you in a day?? Well are they calling and you are not answering or screening? Typically a bill collector may only call and speak to you about the debt once per day unless state law says otherwise. However they can attempt to make contact with you many times.
