Hi,
I have just received a letter from a CA. I am uncertain as to where this debt originated but it could be from my time living in the UK as I have no debts here in the US.
My first question is assuming the debt is valid, do they have any right to demand money from me given that this debt probably originated in a foreign country?
My second question is how amenable are companies such as these (I think they have been assigned the debt rather than have bought it) to settlements below the original loan amount.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not quite sure about the laws in UK regarding collection. But I don't think that a debt in a foreign country can be collected by a collection agency.

In fact, according to US laws of Statute of Limitation, if a person having a debt goes abroad then the SOL stops for that period for which that person remains out of the country. It restarts after the person returns to the country.

Is the CA a US or UK based company? Even though they may not have any legal leverage to make you pay, they still may be able to impact your credit reports.

I've just done some more research on this and the original creditor listed is Link Financial which is a UK based company that bought the debt from a credit card company (MBNA).
