How to find out if a collection agency is legitimate?

If you are wondering "Is Northstar location services legit?" then there are ways to find out. Collection agencies often contact about wrong debts, and to avoid being scammed you need to know how to find whether a CA is legitimate. Here are a few points you should consider next time a CA like Northstar Location Services calls for collection:

  • Ask for validation: Debt validation is very important. Ask the CA to validate the debt along with the name of the original creditor. If the CA cannot or will not send validation as requested, do not pay on the debt.
  • Check for proper validation: If the CA sends validation, check it to make sure it's proper. Make sure you recognize the name of the original creditor. If you don't, chances are that you may be dealing with a scam company. Get help from your State Attorney General's office if the company is trying to scam you.
  • Check the company's license: You should check with your State's Collection Agency Regulatory Board to see if the CA is licensed to do business in your state. If it isn't, then send a Cease and Desist Letter.
  • Ask for a collection letter: Ask the CA to send you a written request for payment so that you can review it. A scam company will not send you any written requests, and if the CA does, then check the phone number on the letter. If there isn't any number listed, there might be a good chance this is a scam.
  • Check for a physical address and phone number: Collection agencies that are legit will not block their number, and will want you to call them back. Find out if the number the CA is calling from is blocked. If yes, beware. Use an online map service to check the CA's address.

There are many reasons why you wouldn't want to work with a particular CA. CAs often call you incessantly, threaten you with dire consequences if you don't pay, call your work phone, or call the wrong number for a debt. If you do not want to work with a collection agency, you need to find out if your original creditor still holds your account or if they have sold it to the collection agency.

If the original creditor still holds your account, you may try to speak with them and let them know why you do not want to work with the collection agency. Whether the original creditor will agree to work with you depends on how well you can convey your message and how well you can convince them. Not all creditors may agree on this proposal, but some may.

Hello,

I need some advice on how to payoff a debt with Household Credit. I just got a collection letter from Northstar Location Services . They claim to be authorized by Household Credit to collect on the Debt i owe Household Credit. My balance due is 1,839.06 but they are willing to settle for 1 payment of 1,103.44. Currently i have the money to payoff the debt.

My question is should i payoff the ammount they are willing to settle on? Or should i pay the balance due ammount? And how do i know if Northstar Location company is acting on Household Credit behave?

Yeh! You have the right to know from a collection agency if they are authorized to collect the money on behalf of your creditor. A letter noting down the total payment due doesn't prove the debt to be with them. You should have more information from a collection agency according to the federal laws.

Call the debt collector to send you the complete info in writing. If you don't get anything in your mail, send a debt validation letter from your side. You need to send the letter through certified mail with return receipt requested and ensure confirmation of the delivery.

After you get this sorted out, review the northstar location services settlement offers and get in writing from them that they will be reporting your account with Household Credit.

You can also call Household Credit and inquire the collection agency collecting on the debt. You will have the option to pay directly to Household Credit if northstar location services, llc haven't sold the account.

A collection agency also has to be licensed in your state. Check to make sure they are allowed to do business in your state

Ok, so when i call or write to NorthStar Location Services, LLC i should ask for debt validation to prove they are collecting on behalf of Household credit?

Should i mention if they can provide me with Debt Validation that i can payoff the debt in full? Will that speed up the process at all?

I don't think it will be good to push them with your money. They have to validate your account in any case if they have it. They may take your commitment in the wrong way if they get it recorded.

You don't want to make any promises you can't keep when it comes to paying a debt off. If you know this debt is valid and can pay it off, why not just go ahead and pay it off

This is the same company that claims to be a third something location service that is used to facilitate communications between their client and the consumer. They adamantly refuse to identify themselves as a collection agency on the phone, even though they are one. I wouldn't trust them even as far as I could throw them.

This Northstar Company called me 24 times in one day. I told the nasty man calling that I would have a professional business conversation with him when he provided me proof that I owe the debt including my signature on any or all documents to prove I owe a debt. They sent nothing. I think they are definately less than professional. Texas
