Medical Debt

I'm 25 years old and have about 30,000 in medical debt from when I had my daughter last year. I just received a collection notice for 6,600 but I know I never received a bill for that. Most of the bills have been turned into collections. Where do I start? What do I need to do? I was never taught about money, credit, and now I am in this situation and have 3 children and do not want them to end up like me.

Well first you should check your credit reports, all three and see what they list under collections, and what other debts are on there. I would make a list of all the debts and who is listed as the creditor. Sometimes contact info is provided as well, if not you will need to get the addresses of all the accounts. But once you have a list, then you at least have a starting point of all your creditors.

Once you have your list, I would send debt validation letters to all of them to see if you really do owe the debt and if they are legally able to collect on it.

You can get a sample letter here:

So first - get your credit reports
2nd - make your list of all creditors
3rd - get all the contact info
4th - send the DV letter to all of them.

Once you have done this and the debts are validated, then you will need to come up with a plan to settle/pay them. You don't mention your income or if you have funds to make payments so can't assist you there, but once you have your total debt and who you owe, post those numbers, then we can provide some direction, i.e. free consultation, etc.
